Dr Lederman is honored to be faculty at the 32nd Annual San Diego Shoulder Institute Meeting

Dr Lederman is honored to be faculty at the 32nd Annual San Diego Shoulder Institute Meeting in June 2015.  The SDSI meeting is the largest dedicated shoulder meeting with international faculties and attendees.  Dr Lederman will lecture on "Repair options for the subscapularis tendon in shoulder replacement” and will serve as lead faculty for surgeon education labs in Anatomic shoulder replacement, Reverse shoulder replacement, shoulder arthroscopic surgery and Latarjet reconstruction.  

Dr. Lederman and colleagues will also present 2 original research posters: "A Reproducible Ratio for Calculation for Glenoid Bone Loss Using CT or MRI and Simple Measurements that all Clinicians Can Use.” by Dr Lederman and "Gender has a Significant Affect on Post-operative Functional Outcome Scores in Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty". Samuel Harmsen MD, James D Kelly MD, Ryan McLemore PhD, Armodios Hatzidakis MD, Tom R Norris MD, Thomas B Edwards MD, Evan S Lederman, MD. Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries with Dr. Bailie

This past Saturday Dr. Bailie joined Todd Ellenbecker and Host Carrie Bordinko, MD on Doctor Talk (KFNN Money Radio 1510 AM 99.3 FM, Saturday’s at 1:00pm). Dr. Bailie and Mr. Ellenbecker discussed shoulder pain, which is the third most common cause of musculoskeletal disorders and rotator cuff injuries.

The rotator cuff is the most commonly torn structure in the shoulder. Rotator cuff tears usually produce symptoms of weakness and pain especially on trying to lift the arm. When an acute injury results in a rotator cuff tear consideration should be given to a surgical repair within six weeks of the injury to avoid atrophy of the muscle and tendon.

Rotator cuff tears are one of the most common reasons patients enter an Orthopedic Surgeons office. There are many common misconceptions about rotator cuff tears and their management.
The rotator cuff is made up of 4 muscles which control how well your shoulder works.
Rotator cuff tears can occur because of an injury, trauma or simply because our tissue wore out.

The new Biomet NANO stemless total shoulder, co-designed by Dr. Bailie

The new Biomet NANO stemless total shoulder, co-designed by Dr. Bailie, has been off to a fast start in Europe. Hundreds have been used for both primary and reverse should replacement with many European surgeon users raving about the simplicity and the ability to customize the device intra-operatively. In addition, the IRB/FDA approved clinical trial has started in the US at 12 centers, of which Dr. Bailie is one (the only center in the Western half of the US). He has enrolled and completed surgeries on qualified patients and will continue to enroll patients who qualify until he reaches the maximum allowed by the FDA. Great job Dr. Bailie!

Dr. David Bailie: resurfacing arthroplasty of the shoulder (specialized partial replacement)

Dr. Bailie has been doing resurfacing arthroplasty of the shoulder (specialized partial replacement) since the FDA approved their use in 2001. In fact, he was instrumental in bringing the technology to the US Orthopedic market with Biomet. This procedure is best for younger, active patients who are in need of pain relief from arthritis of the shoulder but too young to consider a full replacement.

He has performed this surgery on hundreds of patients with excellent mid-term and long term results. This includes active Olympic athletes, a Hall of Fame Major League Baseball player, many physicians/triathletes and "weekend warriors" who desire to maintain a very active lifestyle.

In addition, his work was published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the most prestigious journal in Orthopedics Worldwide. He was asked to also write a book chapter in the prestigious text, THE SHOULDER (Ed Craig, editor) on this topic, which is shown below, and describes the procedure and his results. Congratulations to Dr. Lederman! Dr. Lederman's research paper titled "Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty is Associated with Good Clinical Outcomes that are Sustained Through Mid-Term Follow-Up: Prospective Cohort Study" has been accepted for presentation at the 2013 American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons closed meeting.  Dr. Lederman is the lead author along with Sam Harmsen, MD (Resident-Banner Good Samaritan Orthopedic Surgery Residency program), James Kelly, MD (San Francisco) and Brad Edwards (Houston).
